Sir Francis Xavier Hall, Dublin, Ireland (1982)
St. Francis Xavier Hall, Dublin, gig review, Mar. '82
Went to this gig with friends Billy Cotter & Stephen Barry. Students & broke, ducked on train from Cork, had a great weekend in Dublin, and this gig was the perfect highlight. As massive New Order fans & Joy Division we were in awe and they didn't fail to deliver. Stand out songs for me were In a Lonely Place and Dreams Never End. Having not seen many images of the band previously with them being so "shy" of the media, we were struck by their individual images. Hookie was like a an old boot boy who handled the bass like a gunslinger - to us he seemed like an old guy - but what playing - driving the melody, Stephen held everything together with sticcato beat and drumming par excellence, Gillian was a saintly image like the Madonna, and Bernard who was like a class prefect was playing a melodica like our teachers used in primary school for our nursery rhymes. The whole sound was like from another world. The old gothic hall suited the occasion. It was over in a blink but the music never faded and I carry to this day. "Dreams never End". Jim Barrett
